7 Tips for Drying Wet Carpet and Preventing Mold Growth

Act fast: what to do in the first 24 hours

Nobody plans for a wet carpet. Whether it is a burst pipe on a freezing January night, an overflowing washing machine, or a window left open during one of New York's summer downpours, water and carpet are a combination that demands fast action. The clock starts the moment moisture hits the fibers, and what you do in the first 24 to 48 hours makes all the difference between a full recovery and a mold problem that lingers for months.

At Bay Ridge Carpet & Linoleum Corp, we have seen it all over more than four decades of serving Brooklyn homeowners. Here is exactly what to do when carpet gets wet.

1. Get the water source under control first

Before you touch the carpet, stop the water. Whether that means shutting off a valve, moving the carpet away from the window, or calling a plumber, nothing else you do matters if moisture is still entering the space. Drying a carpet while it is still getting wet is a losing battle.

2. Pull up as much water as possible immediately

Time is everything here. Use a wet/dry shop vacuum to extract standing water from the carpet fibers as thoroughly as you can. Do not use a regular household vacuum. Work in overlapping passes, going slowly so the machine can actually pull moisture out of the pile rather than just skimming the surface. The more water you remove mechanically in this step, the faster everything else goes.

3. Lift the carpet and check the padding underneath

This is the step most homeowners skip, and it is the one that causes the most regret. Carpet padding holds moisture like a sponge and dries far more slowly than the carpet above it. In most cases, saturated padding needs to come out entirely. It is generally not worth trying to save. Pull back the carpet from the nearest wall, remove the padding, and dispose of it. The carpet itself may be salvageable. The padding almost never is once it has been fully soaked.

4. Create serious airflow and keep it moving

Open windows if conditions allow and point fans directly at the wet area. Box fans laid flat blowing across the floor surface work well. If you have access to professional air movers, even better. The goal is to keep air moving continuously across the wet carpet backing and subfloor beneath it. Stagnant air is mold's best friend. Circulation is what dries things out.

5. Bring in a dehumidifier

Fans move air, but dehumidifiers actually pull moisture out of it. Running both together is far more effective than either alone. In a New York City apartment or a basement room with limited ventilation, a dehumidifier is especially important. Empty the reservoir frequently and keep it running until the space feels genuinely dry, not just less damp.

6. Do not put the furniture back too soon

This one is harder than it sounds. Once the visible surface feels dry to the touch, there is a temptation to consider the job done and put the room back together. Resist it. The carpet backing and subfloor beneath can still hold significant moisture days after the surface feels dry. Replacing furniture on a not-quite-dry carpet traps moisture underneath, creates pressure points that slow evaporation, and sets the stage for mold to develop right where air cannot reach it.

7. Know when to call in professionals and when to replace

If the water came from a contaminated source such as a backed-up drain or floodwater that entered from outside, the carpet should be replaced rather than dried. No amount of drying makes a hygienically compromised carpet safe. Even with clean water, if drying did not happen within 48 hours or mold is already visible or detectable by smell, replacement is likely the right call. Our flooring services team can assess what you are working with and give you an straight answer on whether remediation or replacement makes more sense for your situation.

And if water damage is a recurring concern in your home, it is worth looking at waterproof flooring options for high-risk areas like basements, laundry rooms, or entryways. Modern waterproof floors have come a long way and offer genuine style alongside total peace of mind.
